The weapons and combat of GTA 6

Combat was GTA V's weak link. The August 27 Extended Look changed that: a new arsenal, a reworked inventory, and a companion AI that actually fights back. Here's what the video actually establishes, weapon by weapon. For the full mechanic-by-mechanic breakdown, head to our dedicated article.

No more bottomless bag: the inventory is limited

In GTA V, a player could carry a rocket launcher, a sniper rifle and a grenade launcher all at once without the character's animation ever changing. Those days are over. Based on the video and press previews:

  • One primary weapon visibly carried on the character, not a full arsenal
  • One slot for a secondary weapon (handgun)
  • One slot for a throwable (grenade, Molotov cocktail)
  • Binoculars in their own slot
  • The overflow gets stored in the vehicle's trunk or a safehouse

Lucia and Jason cover each other: AI steps up a gear

When you're playing Jason in cover, Lucia — AI-controlled — opens fire on her own to cover him, with no input from the player. The visual style borrows from Red Dead Redemption 2 for the weight of impacts and Max Payne 3 for staging kills: detailed ragdolls, slow-motion on certain takedowns, and dropped weapons that can be picked up mid-firefight.

Frequently asked questions

What weapons have been confirmed for GTA 6?
The August 27, 2026 video shows a shotgun, an assault rifle, an automatic weapon fired from a vehicle, a submachine gun, a sniper rifle, a heavy machine gun and an M16 picked up off the ground. No complete official list has been published.
Is the weapon inventory limited in GTA 6?
Yes. Unlike GTA V's bottomless bag, the character carries a primary weapon, a secondary weapon, a throwable and binoculars; the overflow gets stored in the trunk or a safehouse.
Does Lucia really fight on her own when you're playing Jason?
Yes, in the sequences shown: when Jason takes cover, Lucia fires on her own side to cover him, AI-controlled with no player input.
Does the six-star wanted level change combat?
Indirectly. Police react to what a witness actually saw — face, outfit, vehicle — so switching weapons or vehicles becomes a real escape tactic.
Will GTA 6 have weapon customization like GTA Online?
It's neither confirmed nor ruled out. The August 27 video doesn't show any weapon modification sequence.
