If you pre-ordered, you can start playing the moment the clock hits midnight, as long as the download has finished. Why some players get in earlier
Sony does not unlock the game everywhere at the same moment. Each region switches on at its own midnight, so the launch is spread over roughly 19 hours between the first and last territories. New Zealand goes first, 12 hours ahead of France.

How to pre-load GTA 6 on PS5
You pre-ordered the digital version. The download can start by itself on November 12 if automatic downloads are turned on in the console settings. To let it run overnight, also allow the PS5 to stay connected to the internet in rest mode (Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode).
The download has not started. Open your game library, select Grand Theft Auto VI and start the download manually. The PlayStation App on your phone can also start it remotely while the console is in rest mode.
You bought the boxed copy. Take out the card, open the PlayStation Store, then the "..." menu at the top of the screen and choose "Redeem Code". How to pre-load GTA 6 on Xbox Series X and S
Digital version. Turn on automatic game updates and leave the console in sleep mode rather than shutdown (energy saving): it fetches pre-ordered games as soon as they become available. Otherwise, the game shows up under "My games & apps" in the ready-to-install section.
Boxed copy with a code. In the Microsoft Store, choose "Redeem" and enter the code from the card. The Xbox app on your phone can then start the installation remotely.

How long will GTA 6 take to download?
Rockstar has not published the game's size yet. The most credible estimates sit around 150 to 200 GB. Here is the theoretical download time depending on your connection speed:

These times assume your router and Sony's or Microsoft's servers keep up, which will not be the case on launch night with millions of simultaneous downloads. Wi-Fi will also be slower than an Ethernet cable. Even on fiber, starting the pre-load on November 12 is the safest choice.
What can still hold you up at midnight
🟡 Likely: a day-one update. Rockstar has not announced one, but it has become standard for big launches. If it goes live at midnight, it downloads just as everyone else connects. Leaving the console on or in rest mode on the evening of November 18 lets it grab the patch as soon as it is available.
✅ Confirmed: there is no PC version at launch. Only the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions release on November 19, and the PC version still has no date.
