Rockstar has not published an official file size for GTA 6, on either the PlayStation Store or the Microsoft Store. The figures going around are estimates, and the most credible ones sit around 150 to 200 GB. That is a lot, especially on an Xbox Series S. Pre-loading opens on November 12, so it is worth clearing out your games now.
What is confirmed and what is estimated
โ Confirmed: Rockstar, Sony and Microsoft have not published an official size.
โ Confirmed: the boxed copy sold in stores contains no disc, only a code. The whole game has to be downloaded, physical edition included. We cover this in our article on the discless physical edition.
๐ก Estimate: between 150 and 200 GB. Red Dead Redemption 2 was already over 100 GB when it launched on PS4 in 2018, and GTA 6 is a bigger world built only for PS5 and Xbox Series.
๐ก Likely: a day-one update on top of the base game. Its size is unknown.
๐ด Ignore: the 600 GB figure circulating on social media. No source supports it.
How much space you really have
The capacity printed on the console box is not what you get: the system reserves part of it. Here is the usable space on each model, and the share a 200 GB game would take.
| Console | Advertised capacity | Usable space (approx.) | GTA 6 at 200 GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 (2020 model) | 825 GB | 667 GB | 30% |
| PS5 Slim | 1 TB | 850 GB | 24% |
| PS5 Pro | 2 TB | 1.86 TB | 11% |
| Xbox Series X | 1 TB | 802 GB | 25% |
| Xbox Series S | 512 GB | 364 GB | 55% |
These values are approximate and shift slightly with system updates.
Xbox Series S: the tightest console
With 364 GB of usable space, the Series S will need to give more than half of its storage to GTA 6, before the day-one update. If you keep Call of Duty or another 100 GB+ game installed, you will have to choose.
There are two options: uninstall almost everything before November 12, or add an Xbox Storage Expansion Card (Seagate or Western Digital). It is the only way to increase the space Series X/S games can run from.
Freeing up space on PS5
- Sort by size. The Storage menu in Settings lists games from largest to smallest. That is usually where you find a game you finished months ago.
- Move PS4 games. They run directly from an external USB drive, so taking them off internal storage does not stop you playing them.
- Park PS5 games. They can be copied to a USB drive to avoid downloading them again, but they have to go back to internal storage or an M.2 SSD to run.
- Clear the media gallery. Gameplay videos quickly add up to tens of GB.
- Add an M.2 SSD. It is the only way to increase the console's playable space. Compatible models and our picks are on our GTA 6 SSD page.
Freeing up space on Xbox Series X and S
- Sort by size from the Storage menu in system settings.
- Move Xbox One and Xbox 360 games to an external USB drive: they run directly from it.
- Keep Series X/S games on a USB drive to avoid downloading them again. To play them, they have to go back to internal storage or an expansion card.
- Uninstall Game Pass games you have not launched in a while: they reinstall in a few clicks.
Should you buy an SSD before launch?
It depends on your console and how you play. On a 2020 PS5 with several big games installed, an M.2 SSD saves you months of juggling uninstalls, and November 12 is coming fast. On a PS5 Pro, you do not need one: there is plenty of room for GTA 6.
If you buy one, Sony requires an M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 SSD, recommends a read speed of 5,500 MB/s, and requires a heatsink. We go through those criteria and the models that meet them on our PS5 SSD page for GTA 6. The rest of launch week is covered in our GTA 6 launch guide.
FAQ
How many GB is GTA 6?
Rockstar has not published an official size. The most credible estimates sit around 150 to 200 GB, probably with a day-one update on top.
Is GTA 6 really 600 GB?
No. That figure circulates on social media without any source. No official size has been announced.
Can you play GTA 6 from an external hard drive?
No. On both PS5 and Xbox Series, an external USB drive can store the game but not run it. It has to be on internal storage, an M.2 SSD (PS5) or an expansion card (Xbox).
Does the boxed version of GTA 6 avoid the download?
No. The box contains a download code and no disc, so the whole game has to be downloaded, just like the digital version.
How much space does an Xbox Series S have for GTA 6?
A 512 GB Xbox Series S has about 364 GB of usable space. A 200 GB game would take more than half of it.
Until the official size is published, plan for at least 200 GB of free space. We will update this article as soon as the figure appears on the PlayStation Store or the Microsoft Store.
