How long is GTA 6? How many hours it takes to beat

Rob Nelson, co-director at Rockstar North, says he finished the story and some optional objectives in 80 hours. How that compares with GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, and what to expect for 100% completion.

How long is GTA 6? How many hours it takes to beat

According to Rob Nelson, co-director of the game at Rockstar North, GTA 6 takes about 80 hours to finish. He told The New York Times in late August 2026 that this is how long it took him to complete the main story, along with some optional objectives that affect the narrative. That is more than twice GTA V's story, and longer than Red Dead Redemption 2. Here is how to read that number.

What those 80 hours cover

โœ… Confirmed: the main story, plus some optional objectives that influence the narrative. That is how Rob Nelson himself described it.

๐Ÿ”ด Not included: side activities, collectibles, 100% completion and GTA Online. Yet the August 27 Extended Look showed plenty to do outside missions: basketball, diving, the gym, jet skis, kayaking, an arcade machine.

๐ŸŸก Worth qualifying: we do not know how that time was measured. A developer knows the route through every mission, which speeds things up. He may also have stopped more often than a player would to check details. A first-time player who gets lost in Vice City will probably take longer.

How it compares with GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2

The times below are rounded player averages from HowLongToBeat.

GameMain story100%
GTA V (2013)about 32 hmuch longer
Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018)about 50 haround 180 h
GTA 6 (2026)about 80 h with some optional objectives, per Rockstarunknown

The comparison is not perfect: GTA 6's figure comes from a developer, the others from player averages. It still gives a sense of scale: if the number holds up for players, GTA 6's story will be the longest in the series by far.

How long for 100%?

๐Ÿ”ด Speculative: no figure has been given. If the gap between the story and 100% resembles Red Dead Redemption 2, where finishing everything takes more than three times as long, GTA 6's 100% could go well past 150 hours.

100% completion will also depend on the trophy and achievement list, which has not been published. We cover what is known in our article on GTA 6 trophies.

What about GTA Online?

GTA Online is not part of the November 19 launch and will arrive later, with no official date. By design it has no end: GTA Online kept receiving updates for more than ten years on GTA V. The likely schedule is in our article on story mode and multiplayer.

Planning your first weeks

With 80 hours of story, playing two hours a night takes six weeks. That is a long time to dodge spoilers: summaries of the ending will circulate within the first few days. Muting social media notifications and taking a few days off around November 19 is not over the top. Our tips for getting started are in our beginner's tips article, and the whole launch is covered in our GTA 6 guide.
