GTA 6 RP: Where Does Roleplay Really Stand?
Rockstar bought FiveM in 2023, but hasn't said a word about its future in GTA 6. Here's what we know, what we can guess, and why the answer won't arrive for a long time.
RP is simple on paper: players take on characters with a real narrative thread โ cop, doctor, shady lawyer, dealer โ on a server where the rules they set among themselves matter more than the base game's rules. On GTA V, this thing became bigger than anyone predicted: NoPixel racked up millions of views on Twitch, streamers spent years on it. So as soon as GTA 6 was announced, the question came up on its own: what about RP?
FiveM, the mod nobody saw coming
Roleplay on GTA V doesn't come from Rockstar. It comes from FiveM, an unofficial mod that lets you launch your own servers with custom rules. For years, Rockstar tolerated it without supporting it, and even threatened to shut down some of the cheat tools orbiting around it.
Then in 2023, a plot twist: Take-Two buys Cfx.re, the organization behind FiveM and its Red Dead equivalent, RedM. โ Confirmed: Rockstar now owns the tool that powers the entire RP ecosystem. What it plans to do with it is another story.
What Rockstar still hasn't said about GTA 6
๐ด Nothing. No announcement, no line in a press release, not a word in either trailer about an official roleplay mode or modding tools for GTA 6. Take-Two confirmed it owns Cfx.re โ not what it will do with it on the next game.
And the company has never been in a rush on these topics. On GTA V, the first serious RP servers only emerged around 2015-2016, two to three years after the game's release. Nothing suggests the timeline will move faster this time, with GTA Online itself lacking a confirmed date.
Why I'm still a little optimistic
What makes me optimistic isn't a statement from Rockstar โ there isn't one โ but what the trailers show. NPCs that react individually, weather that seems to affect the environment, cars with interiors modeled in detail: these are exactly the kind of details an RP community builds its stories around.
Buying Cfx.re just to do nothing with it wouldn't make much economic sense either. But between a corporate acquisition and an officially announced RP mode, there's still a lot of silence to fill โ and Rockstar has never been the type to fill it quickly.
FAQ
Will FiveM work on GTA 6?
Nobody knows. Rockstar now owns Cfx.re, FiveM's developer, but hasn't confirmed anything about compatibility with GTA 6.
Will roleplay be possible right at launch?
Unlikely. On GTA V, serious RP servers took two to three years to establish themselves, and nothing says GTA 6 will move faster.
Roleplay on GTA 6 today rests on one solid fact โ Rockstar owns FiveM โ surrounded by a lot of silence on everything else. The world shown in the trailers looks built for it, but having the right terrain doesn't mean building on it right away. If GTA V's history repeats itself, GTA 6's real RP scene won't take shape until months, or even years, after November 19, 2026. This article will be updated as soon as Rockstar says anything on the topic.
